New Paintings

I just finished a few paintings.  I usually don’t try being painterly in my work, but I wanted to expand my experiences in mark-making.  It was a good learning experience and I have found a new infatuation for the “brush.” At Play in the Fields of the LordAt Play in the Fields of the Lord - 48″ x 24″  From the Earth, Layer by LayerFrom the Earth, Layer by Layer - 24″ x 17″ Stages of Glory Stages of Glory - 24″ x 17″ painting setup my setup for painting

TYPOGRAPHIC PRINT EXCHANGE

I had my type-2 class do a project to experiment with hand made type.  It was a collaborative project where we made linocuts of the entire alphabet.  Each student drew a letter from a hat and had to design and print an edition of 26.  Each participant walked away from the project with a full alphabet.  Below are some photos of my letter and the cover I made for the sets.  I had the letter “F”. Two designers from ANALOG where guest artists on the project. You can see their letters here.letter01.jpgletter02.jpgletter03.jpg

Brain Fried on Art

I spent all last weekend traveling throughout Dallas and Fort Worth looking at museums and galleries.  Me and another artist/colleague took a group of students with us.  We saw a lot of art.  We saw the usual greats such as Pollock, Picasso, Warhol, Kline, Motherwell, Turner, etc.  There was one artist, Anselm Kiefer, whom I have been absolutely fascinated with for about 2 years.  He had three amazing pieces at the Fort Worth Modern.  JAW DROPPING and his work was worth the trip alone.  These pictures do not do justice to the work.  The paintings are around 15 foot tall.  The winged book is about 5 foot tall.  kieferblog.jpg

possible drawings

Here are some sketches I am planning on using for a suite of drawings.  I am still working with the ideas of crops and plant diseases.  I’ll be posting some of the drawings when they are completed.

latest addition / biggest edition

I hand-pulled my largest lithograph edition this week.  I pulled 30 prints but will only curate 24 into an edition for a print exchange I am involved with.  This is a duotone (two color) print.  It will be in the web gallery soon for a closer look.

Texas National 2008

I got a very recent drawing I did into the 2008 Texas National.  Juror was Roger Shimomura.  The drawing I got in was “His Darling Afflicted.” webdraw01.jpg

Beginning of a collection…

Since about 2006 I have slowly began collecting prints from artist: Jay Ryan. Thought maybe I would show off what I have so far. Maybe I’ll start posting all the work I collect. I have always found it very interesting what artwork, artists collect. You know, I used to tell myself many years ago that I wanted to have all my own work on the walls of my home. Now it is everyone else’s work instead. Well here are three Jay Ryan’s and his book.

This is his book.

web design: this printmaker’s digital dream vacation

Got another site in the making.  I have been making an artist website for a friend of mine.  Her name is Barbara Payne Ward and you can see her site here. I’ve go some work to do still, but I used this really simple “div swap” feature for the gallery.

All you web geeks out there are going to be the only ones who might appreciate it.

online competition

I won this months best of show in mixed media for MosaicGlobe, an online gallery website.mosaic.jpg

Campus Newspaper

WELCOME

My name is John Chaka and this is my website. I am currently working on prints and drawings. A very close friend named Kurt Dyrhaug once told me, "Learn how to write better. Learn how to describe your work better-formally and conceptually." This is a pretty informal blog and website, so I'll let the work speak for itself. Feel free to contact me if you would like some further dialog or if you would just like to tell me how bad my writting is. Thanks for checking the site out and I hope you see something you enjoy.
You too Kurt!
